Hello Hollins friends! It's hard to believe that June is here and that classes will begin in less than three short weeks. Rebekah and I thought one great use of the blog would be to feature the work of different students in the illustration program. First up, the woman whose art we will soon be wearing all around campus... our t-shirt contest winner, Lucy Rowe! Read on to learn about her creative process. Title: Surprise!
Artist: Lucinda Rowe Size: 13x8.5 inches Medium: Watercolor Date: 4/17/2017 Every month SCBWI has a drawing prompt for illustrators. We are given a word, April's being SURPRISE, and then we are left to our own devices to come up with an illustration that we think embodies that word. I spent several days sketching various ideas – a secret garden, a seedling popping up, a hidden bug – but none of them quite inspired me to take them further than a sketch. As the deadline for the illustration was approaching I reached out to some of my Hollins friends with a plea for help. Always a good idea! They gave me tons of ideas and one of them stuck with me – a child being lifted up by balloons. I started sketching that and it morphed into a cat being lifted up by balloons and then into this cat attacking a balloon. Now that I had a sketch that I was happy with I could move on to painting it. First I lightly trace my sketch onto a nice piece of watercolor paper, this one being a lightly textured 140lb piece, using a light table. Then I can start building up the layers of watercolor. I love painting bushes and trees, but this time I really wanted to capture Roanoke's springtime colors and flowers. The azaleas in Roanoke are in full bloom and are breathtaking; I knew I wanted to have flowering azalea bushes in the illustration instead of just green bushes. Once I'm satisfied with the painting (and that I've added enough birds and flowers) I scan it and clean it up in photoshop. And then it's done and ready to be sent to SCBWI and added to my portfolio!
